Update on recent meetings:

Anglican science bishops explore the ethics of vaccine development 

Online meetings provide opportunities for our lead science bishops to meet, discuss matters of science and faith and hear from guest speakers on a range of topics.

On June 18th and 19th we heard from Professor Sir Andrew Pollard - one of the people instrumental in the creation of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, churches were instrumental in sharing health information with their communities to aid the adoption of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Considering how the church and faith leaders can be of assistance to scientists, Sir Andrew observed:

Faith leaders have an opportunity for communication, that is independent of political parties or pharmaceutical companies, to communicate the science and importance of vaccinations. Where the church is important is in public engagement; it’s a critical part in the process. The communication will be different in different cultural settings and the church will know how to engage the public in their individual setting.

Online event: 
"Partnering with science for God's mission"

The next online meeting of the Science Commission will be held in September with the Rt Revd Dr Joseph Galgalo, Provincial Secretary of the Anglican Church of Kenya, on the topic of ‘Partnering with science for God’s mission’. 

The meeting will be offered on two dates at different times to suit various time zones across the Communion

In-person event:
Virginia Theological Seminary Meeting

The next in-person meeting of the ACSC Lead Science Bishops will take place at Virginia Theological Seminary in 2026, from October 27 to 29, so please save the date if you anticipate attending. 

This meeting is an important opportunity for planning, information sharing and support as we seek to progress the work of the Science Commission across the Communion.

Online event: 

Meeting with Baroness Susan Greenfield

Join us online in November to hear from Baroness Susan Greenfield, a distinguished scientist and member of the House of Lords. Her scientific work concentrates on the brain, with a particular focus on Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases. 

The meeting will be offered on two dates at different times to suit different time zones across the Communion: November 26th 18:00 UCT+1 or November 27th 09:00 UCT+1.
